Mike Rice: Re-Screening Motion Offense

Mike Rice: Re-Screening Motion Offense - Basketball -- Championship Productions, Inc.
  • Maximize two keys to offensive success: Scoring in the paint and getting to the free throw line
  • This is a good offense for smaller teams and teams that are skilled with the basketball
  • Learn how to simplify the game for your players so they can play without thinking

    with Mike Rice, Rutgers University Head Coach;
    former Robert Morris University Head Coach,
    2008 NEC Jim Phelan Coach of the Year,
    NABC District 3 Coach of the Year

    Mike Rice's success is built on a solid half court man defense, scoring in the paint and getting to the free throw line. In the on-court clinic presentation, Coach Rice reveals how he developed his offensive philosophy and re-screening motion to fulfill these two keys on offense.

    One of the easiest ways to score in the paint is off the fast break, and the biggest key to transition offense is spacing. Proper spacing helps your players get a quick, clear read of the "advantages" on the floor. This allows for easy baskets from short range.

    To develop an effective transition game, Rice demonstrates his 5-on-0 transition drill. This is a continuous drill geared toward making layups, jump shots, getting to penetration spots, and working on the next pass - all of which are vital to this re-screening motion offense. This drill serves as a good warm-up as well as getting your players comfortable playing at a game pace.

    Re-Screen Motion
    Coach Rice's Re-screen Motion Offense will allow for easy open looks at the basket. The principles of the offense are simple so your players won't have to do a lot of thinking on the floor; it's more reaction and instincts. The main principles are: that a big and a guard work together on one side of the floor using seven types of screening and reacting actions.

    After a set entry is used and the play does not result in a score or turnover, they use the re-screen to get back into an offensive set. The back side players are constantly screening, which opens the middle for penetration spots and keeps the defense from double teaming on the ball side.

    Rice begins the Re-Screen Motion breakdown with a 2-on-2 drill. He shows the flare-to-pinch re-screen, the back-to-down, the slice-to-flat, the slice-to-down, the back-to-slice, and down action. The players are reading and reacting to the defense and their teammates action. Rice brings it all together in a 5-on-0 Dummy Offense, with the pair screening action on both sides, the use of the dribble to reverse the ball, feeding the post and communicating.

    This offense is good for smaller teams who don't have a true post player or have a team with players who are skilled with the basketball.

      Jim Larranaga combines an on-court clinic presentation with a locker room marker board session to deliver a thorough look at three zone offenses you can use to defeat any zone defense.

      Larranaga demonstrates each zone offense on a marker board as well as on the floor in a 5-on-0 and 5-on-5 setting. In any zone offense, you must emphasize ball movement, man movement, screening, dribble penetration, and offensive rebounding. In this DVD, Larranaga combines all of these techniques into his three offenses.

      # Slice & Dice Zone Offense - Use versus a 2-3, 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone. This offense uses four players on the perimeter and one post to force the defense to move, communicate and change their match ups.
      # Crack & Carve Zone Offense - Use versus a 2-3, 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone. This power game offense utilizes two post players inside and allows them to carve out space, set screens and create good shots for themselves and the perimeter players.
      # Seek & Find Zone Offense - Use versus a 1-3-1 defense. This offense uses a 4-Out formation and diagonal passing, down screens, back screens and penetration to break down the zone and create open shots.

      Having three zone offenses will allow you to install the best fit for your team based on your personnel and your team's strengths.

        Learn special situations plays and strategies to help your team add 4-5 points a game-and win more close games!

        Tom Izzo shares his coaching philosophy on special situations - or what he calls "special teams situations." Any dead ball situation is considered a special teams opportunity and his goal is to be aggressive and pick up 4-5 points a game in special teams play.

        Use these plays and strategies to go after an opposing player who is in foul trouble, generate fouls against your opponent's best player and to get the shots you need late in the game.

        Special teams involves:

        * Jump balls - See three plays to help you score on the first possession of the game.
        * Missed offensive free throws - Get the ball back after a missed free throw.
        * Baseline out-of-bounds - Five plays to attack from the baseline.
        * Sideline out-of-bounds - Four plays with multiple options.
        * Plays after time outs - Five set plays to neutralize heavy defensive pressure.

        Izzo stresses three main goals when it comes to special teams play: Score points, have a specific purpose and have two options (inside and outside).

        Izzo has used these effective plays and strategies to change his team from an NIT team to an NCAA tournament team and again from an NCAA qualifier to a team that makes a deep run in the tournament on annual basis.

        Now you can use these same ideas to improve and advance your team this season.

        How to Run the Michigan Two Guard Front Offense

        with Tom Jicha,
        Sunset High School, (FL) Head Coach

        Level the playing field with a system designed to upset more athletic teams on a consistent basis.

        Tom Jicha presents his interpretation of the two guard front offense, which is based on the offensive system made famous by John Beilein at West Virginia and now at the University of Michigan. This perimeter-based offense is designed to provide scoring opportunities for smaller teams that lack a "true post" player.

        Coach Jicha introduces his three main sets: motion, shuffle and chin and blends them together to form one of the most difficult to defend offenses in the game today.

        Chin Set
        Jicha dissects the chin set on the dry-erase board guiding you through its precision movement. Included are the four ways to get into the chin: the middle pass, the side pass, reversal, and the hand-off. Moving to the court, Jicha demonstrates the tremendous spacing and ball movement options that this offense provides. You will learn the bump cut and pull-through techniques to counter intense defensive pressure. Jicha demonstrates the importance of high dribble outs and the hand-off to create back door cut opportunities.

        Motion Set
        Jicha delivers the primary set he uses on nearly every trip down the floor: the Motion Set. After starting with a quick pass to the wing and a blast cut from the point guard, seven motion options are demonstrated on the court versus defense. The secret to this offense is how smoothly it flows directly into the chin set, frustrating defenders who attempt to guard every v-cut, screen and the lightening quick ball reversal.

        Shuffle Set
        This unique set provides wing-to-block shuffle cutting action and it also flows directly into the chin set.

        In addition to step-by-step breakdown of each set, Jicha teaches 20 effective quick hitters that can be utilized with this offense. Each set has quick hitters designed specifically to take advantage of what the defense is giving. You will see five quick hitters for the chin series, five for the motion series and 10 for the shuffle series. Each quick hitter flows back into the offense and each has multiple scoring options.

        Jicha closes with 10 drills he uses to teach the offensive action and to demonstrate how to get game shots from the action.

        Coach Jicha has effectively dissected this complex offensive system so that it can be totally effective at any level of play.

        with Lawrence Frank,
        Boston Celtics Assistant Coach, former New Jersey Nets Head Coach

        Lawrence Frank delivers proven NBA concepts that are valuable to any high school or college program.

        Coaching Philosophy
        Coach Frank begins with a discussion on coaching philosophy and the importance of your players knowing and believing in that philosophy. He shares some helpful pointers you can use to get your players to "want what you want" and work for a common goal.

        Closeout Defense
        Train your players to take away your opponent's shot, deny the post pass and direct the dribble using three drills that Frank uses with the Boston Celtics. These drills teach the proper footwork and technique for defensive closeouts while working on guarding the ball, sprinting to the ball on the pass, and helping with a cutter.

        Frank also includes instruction on transition defense by demonstrating his 5-on-4 scramble drill. These defensive concepts help illustrate his defensive philosophy: Protect the paint, closeout to contest the 3-point shot and communicate.

        Pick and Roll Offense
        Maintain the flow of your offense even if your set play doesn't work by using the pick and roll. Frank breaks down the four S's for the ball handler in the pick and roll offense:

        * Starting point - Know where to start the pick and roll based on the angle of the screen and how the defense is playing you and your abilities as a player.
        * Set up - Help the screener get the best angle by positioning your self to beat your man.
        * Separation - Create separation from your defender while moving toward the basket.
        * Score

        From there, Frank breaks down the hardest pick and roll to defend - the straight on pick and roll. He shows a basic pick and roll set, a double pick and roll set, and four other actions that will give your ball handler the option on who to use as a screen. In addition, this set up allows you to flow to different alignments that play to the strengths of your team and that give you multiple options from one alignment.

        Coach Frank gives great insight on his coaching style that relates to all levels of basketball. Learn how developing team philosophy, core values, and a team culture will results in togetherness in the locker room and on the court for your team.

        Install these proven concepts and drills into your program today and start reaping the benefits of Frank's extensive basketball experience.

        Alan Stein provides a complete in-season conditioning system that is specific in nature to what your players do in a game. This program will allow your team to shoot, pass, rebound and defend at a much higher level from buzzer to buzzer.

        WARM-UP
        Lay the foundation for your workout or practice with this series of warm-up drills that incorporates basketball specific movements. Stein has players demonstrate a series of dynamic flexibility exercises that prepare players for the cutting, jumping and landing that is performed in basketball practices and games. His vertical jump drill not only improves player's vertical jump, it also improves body control in space, which helps to limits knee and ankle injuries.

        Next Stein challenges conventional thinking by "revving up" his warm up with a series of four core exercises that incorporate a basketball and a weighted ball. These exercises will develop basketball strength in your players' core, shoulders and hips.

        REACTIONARY DRILLS
        Improve the quickness and agility of your athletes with five reactionary drills that emphasize acceleration and deceleration. Stein incorporates tennis balls in his reaction drills to train players to explode from an athletic stance. These drills train acceleration and deceleration skills that will help your player's on defense, getting rebounds and tracking down loose balls.

        AGILITY SERIES
        Break up the monotony of practice with this series of competitive, fun drills. These drills require athletes to perform in tight angles and cuts, which strengthens the feet and improves mobility in the ankles.

        Stein concludes with two ultra-challenging heavy ball drills and four competitive sprint drills, that provide players a fun way to increase conditioning and stamina.

        Keep your players in tip-top shape all season long. These drills will build the base for your team's success - and the broader the base you build, the higher their potential is for success.

          • Build skill and confidence into your elementary level ball handlers with six Core Ball Handling Drills
          • Correct the four most common mistakes made by beginning shooters
          • Teach effective ways to move without the ball that will assist young players in executing any offense

          with Jerry Petitgoue,
          Cuba City HS (WI) Head Boys' Basketball Coach (40+ years),
          19 Conference titles,
          3X Wisconsin State Championships

          Jerry Petitgoue provides the ideal practice plan for any feeder system wanting to put the fun back in fundamentals.

          Coach Petitgoue begins by covering several key points that should be emphasized with all coaches in your feeder program. He discusses:
          # Length of practice
          # Monthly practice plan
          # The appropriate number of games to be played at each grade level

          After a brief warm-up, Petitgoue begins practice with shooting fundamentals showing you drills to teach the proper shooting technique and correct common shooting mistakes. His "spin bounce" technique encourages young shooters to step into the shot from the all-important set position. Petitgoue uses his enthusiastic approach to demonstrate both individual and partner shooting drills.

          Petitgoue shows you how to incorporate the agility ladder and crazy balls into practice to improve your young player's footwork and coordination. He also includes six core ball-handling drills that are a fun way to build ball handling confidence and skill.

          Petitgoue next provides various dribbling drills that incorporate the jump-stop, pivoting and how to protect the basketball. Box-out technique and outlet passes are discussed in detail as Petitgoue demonstrates a simple, yet effective rebounding drill. Petigoue ends his practice with "lightening," a game that is both fun and competitive as it improves young player's skill level.

          Start your young players out on the right foot with a practice plan that will build strong basketball fundamentals.

            From footwork to the follow-through, high school coaching legend Jerry Petitgoue has produced the definitive DVD for teaching young players to shoot the basketball correctly.

            Coach Petitgoue begins by presenting the four key points of shooting, which center around the concept that no player is a born shooter. Next, players perform a variety of form shooting drills where Petitgoue focuses on the process rather then the result, thus giving every player the blueprint to be a great shooter. Petitgoue demonstrates the set position and he outlines the essentials for preparing to shoot the ball correctly. He also explains many common problems and how to correct them.

            You will see drills that, through repetition, will build strong shooting fundamentals. In the shot builder drill, the shooter concentrates on keeping his elbow in while making shots in different locations around the basket.

            Petitgoue gets players in the habit of running into the shot with the sprint-shot drill. This game-like drill teaches players to get behind the ball, have hands ready and use a "1-2 step" into the shot.

            The "peed dribble lay up drill" is a simple drill to teach players to attack the rim from the 3-point line with only one dribble. Petitgoue keeps the drills going with the ball position drill, the spin drill and the 3-man-2 ball shooting drill, which require players to pass, catch, and shoot on the move.

            This DVD is perfect for any coach wanting to develop the art of shooting in their "feeder program."

            • Run Coach Petitgoue's 5- man open post offense, which is simple to teach and a great lead-up to any type of motion offense

                with Jerry Petitgoue,
                Cuba City HS (WI) Head Boys' Basketball Coach (40+ years),
                19 Conference titles,
                3X Wisconsin State Championships

                Legendary master teacher Jerry Petitgoue provides an in-depth look at the ideal 90-minute practice for any feeder program. The practice includes:

                * Warm-up & Exercises
                * Shooting
                * Ball Handling
                * Press Break
                * Fast Break
                * Defense
                * Offense

                /P>

                WARM-UP & EXERCISESThis organized and swift moving practice begins with players performing a dynamic warm-up that includes exercises that are great for improving your players stability and core strength.

                Jumping into practice, Coach Petitgoue gets players into partner groups where he utilizes tennis balls to improve both dribbling and passing skills.

                SHOOTINGPlayers are given an opportunity to check their form everyday with the "shot builder" shooting drill. Petitgoue intensifies the practice with jump-stop lay-ups and the 3-man-2-ball shooting drill, which improves a player's ability to shoot on the move.

                BALL HANDLINGStaying with fundamentals, Petitgoue improves the all-important skill of passing with a variety of stationary drills and passing on the move drills, including the peripheral passing drill. Next players "circle up" for more ball-handling drills as players perform stationary dribbling drills and the 2-Line ball handling where they perform a variety of challenging dribble moves at game speed.

                PRESS BREAKHandling full-court pressure defense has long been a problem for elementary and middle-school aged players. Petitgoue provides the solution to this problem by introducing an all-purpose 1-4 press breaker that can be effectively utilized versus both man-to-man and zone presses. The Vegas press break is also shown. This effective press breaker and be used against 2-2-1 and 1-3-1 zone trapping defenses.

                FAST BREAKYoung players will not realize they are conditioning while they perform the 5-on-0 Fast Break Drill and the State Drill, which is not only competitive, but improves defensive transition and communication as well.

                DEFENSEMoving to the defensive end of the floor, Petitgoue takes young players through the shell drill where he emphasizes jumping to the ball on every pass and pressuring the ball. His coaching points feature one pass and two pass away spacing, sink to the level of the ball to defend the lane on dribble penetration and post defense.

                OFFENSEIn the last segment, Petitgoue introduces the five man open post offense and the three sets, Regular, Iowa and Go, that are executed out of it. This offense teaches players "how to play," and places all five players on the perimeter where they are encouraged to attack the basket.

                Petitgoue ends his practice with the competitive free throw challenge, which is a fun drill that improves both free throw shooting and conditioning.

                Learn to incorporate the fundamentals into your practice, which will lead to better basketball players and more wins on the court.

                    with Bob McKillop,
                    Davidson College Head Coach;
                    2008 NCAA Elite 8,
                    2008 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Coach of the Year;
                    7X SoCon Coach of the Year;
                    2008 USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team Head CoachBob McKillop's philosophy is simple, the "details" of coaching basketball are the foundation of success.
                    In this basketball DVD, Coach McKillop shares his seven keys to successful basketball:
                    • Seeing
                    • Talking
                    • Having an act
                    • Be down and balanced
                    • Do the little things
                    • Flesh-to-flesh contact
                    • Finish everything
                    Learn four daily objectives McKillop uses to help teach the game: Let's get better, have fun, play to win and make every play count; to better help him teach the game. These four objectives are controled by the coach, and if done well, will improve the learning environment in your practices.
                    At Davidson, McKillop's team is an attacking full court offense where they are always aggressive and attack with discipline by taking a high percentage shot in transition. This system also relies on five rules of discipline which are:
                    • Catch and see - Slows the game for the athlete and allows them to quickly find teammates, the person guarding them, and where the opponent is guarding.
                    • Dribble with a purpose - Attack somebody or to help somebody
                    • Offense is a fight for space - Run through your cut or pivot to create space
                    • Finish your cut - Find a spot on the floor and get there after the cut to create great spacing and good angles
                    • Help somebody - Learn to sacrifice - set a screen, run hard up the floor, make an extra pass.
                    On the court, McKillop shows these keys, objectives and rules of discipline in action by showing some of his team drills. The drills include a 2-man stretch drill, read the coach, 3-on-3 with a coach, and triangle shell drill.
                    Learn how to develop your team's offensive philosophy using simple principles that can be developed and refined in your daily practice drills.
                    Strive to be better this season with this inspired presentation from the 2008 NABC Coach of the Year.
                    Produced at the Spring 2010 Verona, NY clinic.

                    View Live Footage: Vance Walberg: Half-Court Pressure Defensive System - Basketball -- Championship Productions, Inc.

                    with Vance Walberg,
                    University of Massachusetts Assistant Coach;
                    Creator of the Innovative Dribble Drive Attack Offense,
                    2005 California JC Undefeated State Champions

                    Vance Walberg has done it again! Walberg delivers his entire half court defensive system sharing the philosophy, terminology, strategies and drills you need to implement this attacking defense.

                    In this DVD, Walberg completes his defensive system (Walberg covered the full court system in his DVD "Full Court Pressure Defensive System") which he feels is a better innovation than his Dribble Drive Attack Offense. He reviews the basics of the full court system including the key concepts of ball pressure, breaking the court into quarters, player assignments and terminology.

                    Using principles similar to his full court system, Walberg transitions into half court pressure defense thoroughly explaining and demonstrating each player's positioning and responsibilities versus a 4-out 1-in set and a 3-out 2-in set.

                    Learn the essentials you need to put a pressure packed defense on the court night in and night out:

                    * Half-court terminology

                    * Screen out responsibilities and drills
                    * Defending the post
                    * Handling the skip pass
                    * Handling screens
                    * Defending the pick and roll
                    * Defending the dribble hand offs or kick backs

                    Walberg uses drill work to bring everything together and to effectively teach the half court pressure defense.

                    In the shell drill, he aligns in either a 4-out set or a 3-out 1-in set to start the drill. From the basic set, he teaches talking and moving and progresses into his paint touch drill, baseline penetration drill, middle penetration drill, and a pick & roll drill. These drills are competitive with points awarded based on the defensive criteria.

                    Then Coach Walberg takes you through one of his favorite defensive drills, the "Perfect 35" drill. Again, this drill is competitive with the defense having to stop the offense for 35 seconds with no fouls, offensive rebounds, post touches, paint touches, or giving up a basket. This drill is a great conditioner as well as an intense drill for the players.

                    Walberg follows up his outstanding floor presentation with game clip examples of the defense in action including detailed commentary.

                    Walberg has established himself as one of the game's most innovative coaches. Now you can implement his entire pressure defensive system using this half court defense video and his Full Court Pressure Defensive System.
